About Dr. William A. Boothe

Since 1987, noted cornea specialist William A. Boothe, M.D., has brought the world into focus with more than 115,000 LASIK laser vision correction procedures. Dr. William Boothe has personally performed more VISX Custom 3-Dimensional Wavefront Customized laser vision correction procedures than any other surgeon in the world and was named VISX Surgeon of the Year by the manufacturer in 1999.

Dr. Boothe also continues to be the most experienced IntraLASIK surgeon in the world, having now performed over 69,000 IntraLASIK procedures and over 115,000 LASIK surgeries. His passion for excellence and his commitment to state-of-the-art technology has made Boothe Eye Care and Laser Center one of the premier vision centers in the country.

A pioneer in the field of refractive surgery, Dr. William Boothe was one of the first cornea specialists to be trained in vision correction techniques during his Fellowship. In addition, he was the first cornea-trained surgeon in the Dallas area to use an FDA-approved Excimer laser for refractive surgery. Dr. Boothe was among the first three surgeons in the Dallas area (and one of the first in the country) to use a microkeratome, the instrument that creates the flap during the initial part of ALK and LASIK surgery. The delicate procedure of precisely lifting the flap is critical to overall success of the surgery.

Dr. William Boothe's peers recognize his experience as he has taught other surgeons his technique in performing the LASIK procedure. Dr. William Boothe is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. William Boothe's love of medicine and passion for advancing technologies combined to make him a pioneer in ophthalmology.

A native Texan, Dr. Boothe received his undergraduate degree from Rice University with honors and completed his residency at Texas Tech University School of Ophthalmology. He attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, before serving an internship at Presbyterian Hospital in Internal Medicine. Dr. Boothe completed a cornea fellowship at Jules Stein Eye Institute (University of California Los Angeles Medical School) where he specialized in refractive surgery.

Before choosing ophthalmology as his specialty, Dr. Boothe worked as an emergency room physician. He was the director of the Plano Emergency Center, as well as the director of the Angelo Association Emergency Center in San Angelo, Texas. "I wanted to work in an interesting specialty," Dr. Boothe said. "Ophthalmology certainly qualified, since it is a fast-paced field that is continually evolving."

From 1983 until 1986, he was in residence at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Texas Tech University Health Science Center. This was followed by a fellowship in the Cornea-External Disease Division of the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles Medical Center. Dr. Boothe's fellowship prepared him to start his own practice. He chose Plano as the site for his clinic, Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center.

From the day he opened his business in 1987, Dr. Boothe was determined that his clinic would offer patients the highest-quality, most effective techniques for improving their vision. "Ophthalmology can dramatically improve the overall quality of life for my patients," Dr. Boothe says. "That's what makes my job so worthwhile. I am extremely blessed to have the ability to change the lives of my patients in such a profound way."

In the early 1990s, Dr. Boothe began performing LASIK laser vision correction surgery, a major breakthrough in the field. In fact, he says, he was the first cornea surgeon in the area to use a laser that was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. "I insist upon being able to offer my patients the latest advances in the field of laser technology," Dr. Boothe says.
