LASIK Information

LASIK Surgery Procedures
What is PRK? PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is an alternative to LASIK. PRK is performed without creating a corneal flap. It is also referred to as a "surface ablation." When LASIK is performed, a corneal flap is created. The flap is folded back and then the excimer laser ablates the corneal tissue. There is little pain during LASIK, because although the outer surface of the cornea is very sensitive, the inner tissue, where the laser is used to remove tissue, has no nerve endings. The corneal flap is created using a microkeratome which is a blade, or a femtosecond laser. LASIK performed with a femtosecond laser is usually done with a device call IntraLase and is often known as “bladeless LASIK.”
